OK, I have a friend who is a voice over artist.

JoJo Jensen, www.jojojensen.com. She has a service called Chapter and Voice... she reads/records the initial pages of a writer's novel/story/etc. to peak interest. We also play tennis together, and over the net, we decided we should do this:

Cartoonist Bliss

Virginia Woolf, one of the great 20th-century novelist, once said that she hated writing... but loved having written. I can relate. There is no slog more sloggy than a Monday morning with nothing written, just a blank notebook, staring back at me expectantly... and a week of cartoons due by Thursday.

Behold, bliss for a cartoonist with never-ending deadlines— 

A week of cartoons, ready to ink. Kick back, turn on the tunes, inking is the Zen of my job.

Book Nine is here... BRACE YOURSELF

This is a banner year for me... not one, but TWO books released. I am one lucky cartoonist!

In January Book Eight — We'll Be REally Careful! — appeared in bookstores and online. This is the eight collection of my comic strip Stone Soup, 192 pages and in full color. Some of the stand-out storylines include Gramma going to Africa to build houses, despite a family that can't quite believe she's going... and Holly trying to protect the memory her dad as she grapples with her mom's affection for Office Jackson.  OK, and lots of other funny, light-hearted stuff!

Now in June, Book Nine — Brace Yourself — has made it's way into the world. Brace Yourself is also 192 pages, full color, and contains, among other story lines, the complete story of Luci's creation (oops) and home birth.

 
You can order both these books from links on this site, or from any other online or realworld bookseller. (If you live in Eugene, I recommend the UO Bookstore and Barnes & Noble as sure bets. But you can ask any store to order it for you if you don't see it on the shelf.)

Stone Soup and the Kinsey Institute

 

Today I received an email from The Kinsey Institute, the famous home of sex research and therapy, letting me know that an original strip that I donated to their library is included in a current gallery show, "Storytellers". 

                                    

From their website:

Storytellers provides a rare opportunity for gallery visitors to view a wide range of material pulled from The Kinsey Institute’s extensive library collection, with an intriguing selection of pulp fiction paperbacks from the 1960s, illustrated erotic novels, underground comic books, Japanese pillow books, and other narrative texts. Story-driven artworks are also included in the exhibition, ranging from vintage photographs, prints, watercolors, and drawings by anonymous and known artists to a series of Judy Chicago lithographs and other contemporary pieces.

How did this happen, you might be asking...

 

Leave it to Gramma.

In December of 2001 Gramma (Evie) took an oil painting class at the senior center. But because Gramma is Gramma, she couldn't just paint a nice landscape or fruit (she'd rather wear it). No, she gravitated to the classic subject... the nude. I can't remember exactly which strip in the series the Kinsey Institute requested for their collection, but here are my favorites:
